What is Lip Gloss?

Lip gloss is a cosmetic used primarily to give lips a glossy luster, and sometimes to add a subtle color. It is distributed as a fluid or a soft solid (not to be confused with lip balm, which generally has medical or soothing purposes, or lipstick, which generally is a solid, cream-like substance that gives off a more pigmented color.) The product is available in ranges of opacity from translucent to solid and can have variously frosted, glittery, glossy, and metallic finishes.

Benefits of Lip Gloss

Enhances the appearance of lips
Lip gloss is often thought of as a cosmetic product that is used solely for the purpose of making the lips look more attractive. While this is certainly one of the benefits of using lip gloss, there are actually a number of other benefits that make this product worth using on a regular basis. For example, lip gloss can help to hydrate and moisturize the lips, keeping them healthy and looking their best. In addition, lip gloss can also provide a bit of protection for the lips, helping to shield them from the sun’s harmful UV rays.

Adds a subtle shine
One of the biggest benefits of using lip gloss is that it can add a subtle shine to your lips. This can be a great way to add a touch of glamour to your look, without going overboard. If you want to add a bit of drama to your look, you can also layer lip gloss over lipstick. This will give your lips a bit of extra shine and color.

Locks in moisture
It is often used to add a bit of shine and color to the lips, but it can also be used to moisturize and protect them. Many lip glosses contain ingredients that help to lock in moisture, keeping the lips hydrated and soft. This is especially important in cold weather or when exposed to air conditioning or other drying conditions.

Creates a smooth, glossy look
Another benefit of using lip gloss is that it can create a smooth, glossy look. This can be a great look for special occasions or for everyday wear, depending on the type of lip gloss you use. Some lip glosses are very sheer and natural looking, while others are more opaque and can be used to create a more dramatic look. Lip gloss can also be used to add a bit of shine to your lips, which can make them look fuller and more plump.

Can be worn alone or with lipstick
Lip gloss is one of those beauty products that can be worn alone or with lipstick. It can provide a sheer wash of color or be built up for a more dramatic look. It can also be used to add shine and dimension to the lips.

Comes in a variety of shades and finishes
It comes in a variety of shades and finishes. You can find a lip gloss to suit any occasion, mood, or outfit. Whether you want a natural look or something more glamorous, there's lip gloss for you. And if you can't find the perfect shade, you can always mix and match to create your own unique color.

Easy to apply
35% of women say they feel more confident when wearing lip gloss, and it's easy to see why. A little bit of shine can make your lips look fuller and plumper, and it can also help to disguise any fine lines or wrinkles. It is also incredibly easy to apply, and can be worn on its own or over your favorite lipstick.

Can be used to manipulate the shape of lips
Another benefits of using lip gloss is, it can be used to create various looks, from a natural 'my lips but better' look to a more dramatic, vamped up style. One of the main benefits of using lip gloss is that it can help to manipulate the shape of your lips.

Types of Lip Gloss

Transparent
This type of lip gloss comes in liquid form and is totally transparent without any color in it. These are best used for minimal makeup looks when you apply them on nude lips or over any other lipstick shade for the glossy finish of the same color.

Color-toned
These again are liquid lip glosses that come in different colors, mostly in fruit-inspired colors accompanied by their individual flavors. These are great for young makeup enthusiasts who love to touch up their lips frequently all through the day!

Glitter gloss

Another liquid form of lip gloss, these contain glitter particles in the transparent or colored product. The effect of these on the lips is that of a super-shining gloss finish for evenings, special events, and makeup needs!

Color-changing

These are special effect lip glosses that come in the same gel form as those from Chameleon Glitter Lip Gloss in 8 different colors. These lip gloss colors change shades with different angles of light due to the multiple color particles that their special formula contains. This gives them the Chameleon name!

Metallic effect

Lip glosses that give off a metallic sheen due to the pearlescent effect of the gel formula are suitable for special makeup needs. Chameleon glosses give off this metallic sheen along with the color-changing effect.

Components of Lip Gloss

Most lip glosses are composed of polybutene, a liquid, and hydrogenated polyisobutene, an oil that prevents water loss. Other ingredients in lip gloss are mineral oils, petrolatum, titanium dioxide, and many other chemicals that are hard to spell. Lip gloss can even be home made.

Process of Lip Gloss

Melt wax

First, you will need to melt the wax. The can be done using either a stovetop or a microwave. No matter which method you use, you’ll need to add the wax to the heating vessel first. Make sure that the wax is already in small pieces. If not, use a grater to break it up. You can start by using one tablespoon of wax, which will allow you to make about 6 or 7 tubes of lip gloss.

If you’re using a microwave, all you need to do is heat the wax in there for about a minute. Then, stir it up to remove any coarse bits.

The stovetop strategy is called the double-boiler method. However, it is more involved, and we don’t recommend it unless you need to melt large quantities of wax. With the double-boiler method, you’ll heat the wax in a small pot centered inside of a larger pot of boiling water.

Add oils

The second step is to add the oils to the wax. For microwave users, add the oil after you take your heated wax out of the microwave. You should use a ratio of 4 tablespoons of oil for every 1 tablespoon of wax. Then, stir the wax again to make sure the consistency is even.

When you melt your wax in a pot on a stove, you will add the oils directly into the post. The quantities are the same. Use 4 tablespoons of oil for every 1 tablespoon of wax.

Mixing your wax and oils is how to make lip gloss base.

Add flavor, color, glitter and fragrance (optional)

While the wax is still hot, add any flavor and scents that you desire. You only need a small amount of flavor. Use one-eighth of a teaspoon of flavor for one tablespoon of wax.

At the same time as you add the flavor, you can add the color and glitter as well. The wax should still be hot when you add these.

Pour into containers

Once you’ve added everything, pour the warm mixture into your lip gloss containers. Use a funnel if needed. Once this is done, the process is essentially finished. This is how lip gloss is made.

Cooling and packaging

The lip gloss will take about 20 minutes to cool. You can also accelerate the process by putting the lip gloss in the fridge. Once it is ready, add labels and package it up to achieve the lip gloss branding you defined.

How to Maintain Lip Gloss
High Gloss Lip Oil

Find a suitable storage place

One of the first things you need to do is find a suitable storage location for your lip gloss stock. Look for a cool, dry place that is away from direct sunlight. If your lip gloss is in transparent containers, consider placing them in a dark storage cabinet or drawer to minimize light exposure.

Take advantage of temperature-controlled storage

If available, use temperature-controlled storage for certain lip gloss products. Some essential oils and ingredients in lip gloss formulas can degrade over time, especially in warm temperatures. Using temperature-controlled storage will help you avoid this issue. You can utilize a refrigerator or climate-controlled storage unit that regulates temperature and humidity levels.

2

Clean your storage space regularly

Maintaining proper hygiene and organization standards in your storage space is essential to keeping your lip gloss stock in top condition. Clean your storage space regularly to avoid dust accumulation that could get into your products. This practice will help you keep your stock free from contaminants that could affect its quality.

1_03

Choose airtight containers

Airtight containers are the best type of containers to use to store flavored lip gloss. These types of containers prevent moisture from entering the containers, which can result in ruined lip gloss products. Using airtight containers is an ideal solution if you want to keep your lip gloss stock in excellent condition.

The Right Way to Apply Lip Gloss

Instead of putting lip gloss on like lipstick (swiping it on from one side to another on each lip), apply gloss on the middle of your bottom lip only, then rub your lips together. This adds the perfect amount of sheen while keeping the gloss from getting goopy.

If you're looking for high shine, apply a full sweep of gloss to the bottom lip and press lips together.

Gloss can elevate your lipstick or even your favorite drugstore lip stain, too, whether you opt for a neutral shade or a bold hue. After applying lipstick and lip liner, dab just a bit of gloss on the center of your bottom lip, then press your lips together.

How to Make Your Gloss Long-Lasting

1

Prime your lips
Regular exfoliation and hydration of your lips will create a smooth foundation allowing your lip gloss to stick to your lips better. Using a lip primer will also help make your lip gloss long-lasting.

2

Line your lips
Lining your lips will help create a barrier that lip gloss and lipstick cannot easily cross. This will allow your lip gloss to stay on your lips longer, rather than rubbing off and spreading around your face! For an extra layer of protection, you can also place a liner of concealer around the edges of your lips. This will create another barrier in place to help your lip gloss last longer.

3

Use a matte lipstick
If you’re applying lip gloss over lipstick, it’s recommended that you pick a matte lipstick, rather than one with a shine or shimmer finish. Too many shiny layers can create a surface that lip gloss can’t stay on, which will cause it to rub off and not last as long.

4

Powder your lips
This one might sound crazy, but we promise it works! If you’re applying a colored lip gloss on bare lips, you can apply a thin layer of powder to your lips first. This powder will help set your lips and create a base that will help make lip gloss last longer! Even with these tips, your lip gloss will probably require a few re-applications throughout the day. Make sure to toss it in your bag before leaving!

How To Choose a Lip Gloss Shade

If you’re on the fence about what lip gloss color you should wear, there are a few color-matching tips that will help your decision making. “Choosing a lip color is fairly universal across lipsticks, lip liners, and lip glosses, so you can always take what you know suits you in a lipstick and find a similar shade of lip gloss.”

1_02

Think about undertones

It can be helpful to think about your lip gloss based on your skin tone. Cool, neutral, or warm, working with your skin’s undertone can help you find a shade that complements your complexion the most. “Warm undertones tend to pair well with peachy or golden hues, while rosy or berry shades complement cool undertones. Neutral shades work well on every undertone, and it’s more of a personal choice in finding a neutral lip gloss hue that gives you just the right amount of color-payoff you’re looking for.”

Consider your wear

Another factor in deciding what lip gloss shade to go for is what you’re going to be wearing it for. Is it for everyday wear? You may want something more neutral and understated. Is it for evening events? Try a deeper hue or a shimmery shade. If it’s for work you may want something that’s a touch bolder than a neutral while still staying office-appropriate.
